ED MCMAHON IS DEAD?!
This is what happens when you don’t have a computer for 2 days, you guys. If I did, I would have known about it in the A.M. like everyone else! I really am addicted to this whole instantaneous information thing.

Guest commentary over at The Flying Mexican.
I wouldn’t know a steroid from a reefer.

Thoughts from a fan
It really bothers me that the only women WGN seems to show when they cut to the stands are blonde. They also like babies, but that’s not really worth writing about as much as this.
The Flying Mexican really got me thinking about females in the ballpark. More specifically, he asked me about female stereotypes at a game.
I’m fairly self-aware as a girl (woman, my women’s college...

– Alex, my 16-year-old brother, after seeing that a new toilet had been installed to replace one in our house that had been there since the ’70s.

Pretend graduating?
It’s no secret now that I am six credits short of my degree, and so when I walk across the stage, it won’t be the symbol of accomplishment that it could have been. At least for my family, anyway.
My mom brought up the point that it would be kind of fake and that she won’t be as excited to celebrate. Ouch.
But if I didn’t walk in Sunday morning’s commencement...
Desperate measures
The Associated Press wrote this on Thursday, April 30..
Chicago Tribune reporters question paper’s ethics CHICAGO — Reporters at the Chicago Tribune say they believe the marketing department in recent weeks solicited subscribers’ opinions on stories before they were published, a practice they said raises ethical questions, as well as legal and competitive issues. An e-mail signed by 55...

So I don’t live in Chicago anymore, not since October. But I did a search of my old address, and found pretty much what I expected. A few thefts from the 24-hour Jewel that I could see from my window, a recent five-star review of my favorite cafe in the neighborhood (my friend Beth and I used to call it Europe because it reminded us of it). I saw my old apartment building had yet another...
Podcasting without the iPod is.. casting?
Oh, Tumblr, I’m so sorry I haven’t been keeping up with you. Life has been insanely busy/stressful for me lately.
I used to keep up with a podcast called The David Stein Show, which is on local radio station 670 The Score (WSCR) from 2am to 6am. Naturally, I was never able to listen to it live, because bedtime for me is usually right when it’s starting. So I would have to...

Holy cow
… It is SO strange getting back online after being off for a week. You folks are quite prolific here and on Twitter.
I went to Arizona to visit a cousin during Spring Break, and wouldn’t you know, the screen on my laptop got CRACKED on its merry way through airport security at MDW. That was at the beginning of a six-hour wait for my flight.
Then I found out when I got to our hotel...

That's edutainment!
If I stretch my brain back far enough, multimedia is watching a slide show in science class with accompanied sound from a tinny cassette player. The amphibian life cycle. What happens to your body during puberty. Big Bang Theory.
And technically, multimedia is TV. Sound plus pictures. The Carol Burnett Show! Who’s the Boss? But now so many other things have been added. What about those...

Take that, Facebook
Facebook and MySpace are ghosts from my past—things I’ve abandoned in the quest to leave drama behind. I hear about them all the time, but I’ve never looked back. Twitter is starting to occupy my time the way Facebook did, taking up my spare time (and some of my valuable time, too). What makes Facebook so lame in comparison is the level of interaction it offers. If you want to talk...

My first domain!
I’ve been getting e-mails from the Portfolio Center telling me to hurry up and complete my business card application. On it is a space for you to put your website. Well, I don’t want to be sending people CDs forever, so I decided to fill in that blank.
Today I took the plunge and bought my own domain name. Don’t laugh, because my options were pretty slim. It’s...
Commenting on tumblr.
I’ve always wondered why tumblr doesn’t have built-in commenting. Maybe I’m jumping the gun on this, but I decided to do a little investigating and find a way to make it work.
Lo and behold, I found Disqus.com. Disqus is a free site that hosts your commenting and even gives you the code to paste into your layout. Given that we just learned the basics of code in class, adding it...
It's called teamwork for a reason
When I started my private education as a preschooler, the emphasis was placed on the individual child instead of the class as a whole. Even when I got older and started looking at colleges, the introductory pamphlets for the private schools touted “one-on-one” learning and “small class sizes.” We are unique with our own ideas, and we shouldn’t have to compromise that,...
You've got mail!
What can you do on the internet now? You can earn a degree, price compare, learn a new language, look for a job, talk to people in faraway places, get directions, buy almost anything, read a book… the list goes on.
I remember the day our first computer arrived at the house, in one of those hilarious cow boxes. It was a Gateway — to the internet. Those were the days of hard disks and Carmen...
Love is respect.
Last week marked National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week. The week was started three years ago and takes place every February, in the first full week of the month. This year, it was Feb. 2-6. Two days after it ended, 20-year-old musician Chris Brown made headlines for getting into a physical altercation with 19-year-old singer Rihanna. It forced the issue into the spotlight.

Journalism ninjas?
If my journalism learnings fail to get me a job in the ever-changing industry, I’ll just be a ninja. Or, you know, I could always get a job as a waitress and freelance on the side.
(Yes, that’s really me over there.)
After five years of transferring and changing majors, I’m SO ready to get out of here, but I’m still a little anxious. But I plan to channel that anxiety...
