Pretend graduating?

It’s no secret now that I am six credits short of my degree, and so when I walk across the stage, it won’t be the symbol of accomplishment that it could have been. At least for my family, anyway.

My mom brought up the point that it would be kind of fake and that she won’t be as excited to celebrate. Ouch.

But if I didn’t walk in Sunday morning’s commencement ceremony, I think I would be missing out. These are the people I associate with, the ones I’ve spent the most time in class with. If I waited until next May, I’d be more or less graduating with strangers. It would be weird.

Is it more about the meaning of finishing the year with my friends, or is it about being actually finished with everything, credits included? Somehow the conversations with my family have left me a little disenchanted.
